What it is
An AI citation is the reference an answer engine shows with its answer: the numbered footnotes in Perplexity, the source links beside a Google AI Overview, the linked sources in ChatGPT search. It records which pages the engine retrieved and relied on while writing, and it is the closest thing AI search has to a ranking position.
A citation is different from a mention. A model can name a brand from what it learned in training without crediting any page, while a citation points to a specific URL. Citations are also where the remaining clicks from AI answers go, so being cited is the part of AI visibility that can still send traffic.
Why it matters
Clicks on citation links are rare, but they are not the only value. A citation places your page, and your wording, in front of everyone who reads the answer, and it signals which sources an engine trusts on a topic.
Ranking well no longer guarantees a citation. Google’s AI features search more widely than the query typed, so pages cited in AI Overviews increasingly come from outside the top results for that query. Citation has to be measured directly, not assumed from rankings.

How to do it
- 1
Track citations separately from mentions for your prompt set, and record the exact cited URL, so you know which pages earn them.
- 2
For prompts where you are not cited, list the pages that are and look at what they share: a direct answer near the top, specific figures with sources, a table, a clear date and author.
- 3
Make each important page the cleanest source for one claim: lead with the answer, put the evidence beside it, and use lists and comparison tables that can be quoted without rewriting.
- 4
Cover the related questions an engine fans out to, not just the head query, because citations increasingly come from pages ranking for those neighbouring searches.
- 5
Keep cited pages current and crawlable; check your robots.txt allows the AI search crawlers you want to be cited by.

Common mistakes
- Assuming a top ranking means you are cited, when many cited pages rank far lower for the original query.
- Counting brand mentions as citations; a mention sends no one to your page.
- Blocking AI search crawlers in robots.txt while hoping to be cited by the same engines.
An example
The shift away from the original results
Ahrefs ran the same study twice. In the first run most AI Overview citations came from the top results for the query; in the second, fewer than half did. Ahrefs attributes the change to Google leaning more on pages from the related searches its AI features run behind the scenes, which is why optimising only for the head term now misses most citation opportunities.
Not to be confused with
- Brand mention
- A mention names you in the answer text; a citation links to one of your pages as a source. You can have either without the other.
- Backlink
- A backlink is a link from another website. An AI citation is a link from a generated answer, and it changes from one answer to the next.
