AI visibility

Also called AI search visibility, LLM visibility, generative search visibility

Definition

AI visibility is how often, and how favourably, a brand appears in the answers AI engines generate for the questions its buyers ask.

The idea

What it is

AI visibility measures a brand’s presence inside generated answers rather than in a list of links. It is built from a fixed set of prompts, run against each engine on a schedule, recording for every answer whether the brand was mentioned, whether one of its pages was cited as a source, how it was described, and which competitors appeared instead.

It is not one number but a small family of them: mention rate (the share of answers that name you), citation rate (the share that link to one of your pages), sentiment or accuracy of what is said, and share of voice against named competitors. Each is tracked per engine, because ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google’s AI Overviews draw on different sources and rarely agree.

The evidence

Why it matters

A growing share of research now ends inside an answer, and the traditional signals do not see it. When Google shows an AI summary, people click through to results far less often, and they almost never click the links inside the summary itself. A brand can therefore lose attention without losing a single ranking, and nothing in a rank tracker will say so.

Google also folds AI Overview and AI Mode traffic into the ordinary Search Console totals rather than reporting it separately, and chat assistants pass little referral data. Prompt-level measurement is the only direct way to see whether you are part of the answer at all.

The steps

How to do it

  1. 1

Write the prompt set before choosing a tool: the questions a buyer asks on the way to a purchase, in their own phrasing, grouped by stage. Leave out branded prompts, which nearly always mention you and so tell you nothing.

  2. 2

Run every prompt on each engine your buyers use, several times per period, and record mentions, cited URLs and competitors named. A single run is an anecdote, not a measurement.

  3. 3

Report mention rate and citation rate separately. Being named from a model’s general knowledge and being cited as a source call for different fixes.

  4. 4

Read the answers, not only the counts. Check whether what is said about you is accurate and current, and log the pages cited when you are missing, because those are the sources to study or earn a place on.

  5. 5

Compare trends over weeks against your content and PR calendar, and judge change by the direction across the whole prompt set rather than movement on any single prompt.

Track AI visibility
What goes wrong

Common mistakes

  • Treating a position in one answer like a ranking. Answers vary so much from run to run that a brand’s “position” is mostly noise.
  • Tracking branded prompts and celebrating a high mention rate that any brand would get.
  • Averaging all engines into one score, which hides that you may be strong in one and absent from another.
  • Counting mentions without reading them, so an outdated or wrong description goes unnoticed while the chart looks healthy.
In practice

An example

Why single checks mislead

SparkToro’s study is the clearest public demonstration of the problem AI visibility tracking has to solve. Asking the same recommendation question repeatedly almost never returns the same brand list, so the useful question is not “are we in the answer” but “in what share of many answers are we named”. That is why credible tools run prompts repeatedly and report rates rather than positions.

Not to be confused with

Share of voice
AI visibility is your own presence in answers; share of voice expresses that presence relative to the competitors who appear in the same answers.
AI citation
A citation is one outcome AI visibility counts: a link to your page as a source. A brand can be visible through mentions with no citation at all.
Search rankings
Rankings are positions in a list of links for a keyword. AI visibility is presence inside a generated answer for a question, and the two often move independently.
