What it is
Answer Engine Optimization is optimising for the places that return one answer instead of ten links: featured snippets, People Also Ask, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, voice assistants and the retrieval step inside chat search. The term predates the current wave of AI search. It grew up around featured snippets and voice, and has been stretched to cover generative answers since.
What makes a page answerable is unglamorous. The question is stated or clearly implied, the answer comes first in plain declarative sentences, and the detail that follows is organised so a system can lift one part without dragging the rest along. A page written for a busy reader who skims is usually most of the way there.
Why it matters
Google is explicit that nobody can mark a page to become a featured snippet or to appear in AI Overviews. Its systems decide. That makes AEO a matter of being the clearest, best-supported answer on the page, not of adding a special tag, and it rules out a whole category of shortcuts sold as AEO.
It also matters because the answer surface keeps the reader. People who see an AI summary click fewer ordinary results, and very few click the links inside the summary. If the extracted answer is yours, your framing and your name travel even when the visit does not.

How to do it
- 1
Build a question inventory from sales calls, support tickets, People Also Ask and the prompts buyers type into chat tools.
- 2
Answer each question in the first one or two sentences under a heading that states it, then expand with detail, steps or a table.
- 3
Use lists for steps and tables for comparisons, because those are the formats search features lift most cleanly.
- 4
Add FAQPage or other structured data only where it describes what is visibly on the page, and keep it matching the text.
- 5
Use snippet controls deliberately: data-nosnippet on text you never want quoted out of context, and max-snippet if a page should not become a featured snippet.

Common mistakes
- Believing schema forces an answer box. Google says no special markup is needed for AI features and no markup makes a featured snippet, so markup helps understanding but does not guarantee selection.
- Burying the answer under a long introduction. Extraction favours the passage that answers first, and a warm-up paragraph is the part most likely to be skipped.
- Writing one page per trivial question variant. Thin near-duplicate pages dilute a site instead of making it the obvious source.
An example
Google’s own snippet controls
Google’s documentation shows the other side of AEO: how to stop extraction. The nosnippet rule blocks both regular and featured snippets, max-snippet limits how much text can be shown, and the data-nosnippet attribute keeps specific text out of snippets. Knowing these controls helps you protect passages that could mislead when quoted alone, such as pricing caveats.
Not to be confused with
- Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
- GEO comes from research on generative engines and focuses on being used and named inside a written answer. AEO focuses on being extracted as the direct answer. The work overlaps almost entirely; the labels differ mainly in emphasis.
- LLM Optimization (LLMO)
- LLMO is the broadest of the three, covering how a brand appears in language model outputs generally, including answers given without retrieving any page. AEO is about pages being extracted by answer surfaces.
