What this markup does today

Google shows recipe rich results with the image, rating and cooking time. An image is required for them, and ingredients and steps must match the recipe on the page.

In the output

What you get

  • Valid Recipe JSON-LD
  • Ingredients and HowToStep instructions
  • Times in ISO 8601 duration format
  • Nutrition and ratings where you have them
  • That name and image, the fields Google requires, are present.
  • That each ingredient is its own recipeIngredient entry and each step its own HowToStep.
  • That prep, cook and total times use ISO 8601 durations such as PT15M.
  • That ratings are included only with both a value and a count.
Three steps

How to use the Recipe Schema Generator

1

Enter the name and image

Both are required for recipe rich results.

2

Add ingredients and steps, one per line

Write them exactly as they appear on the page.

3

Add times and yield

Durations in ISO 8601: PT10M for ten minutes, PT1H30M for an hour and a half.

Why it matters

Why recipes reward markup more than most pages

Recipe results are visual.

Google shows recipes with an image, rating and cooking time, which is the difference between a listing and a result people choose.

The image is required.

Without an image, a recipe is not eligible for the rich result at all.

Steps should be steps.

Each instruction as its own HowToStep lets engines read and present the method in order.

It must match the page.

Ingredients and instructions in the markup have to be the ones a reader sees.

After you run it

What to do with the result

Recipe markup has one of the clearest payoffs in structured data: an image, a rating and a cooking time in the result itself. The effort is in matching the markup to the recipe exactly and keeping it matched as recipes are edited, which is easiest when both come from the same source.

Frequently asked questions

At minimum a name and an image. Google recommends ingredients, instructions, times, yield, nutrition and ratings, and a recipe with more of them is more likely to show with detail.
