What this markup does today

Google uses this for video results, the video tab and key moments. Name, thumbnail and upload date are required; a contentUrl or embedUrl lets Google fetch the video itself.

In the output

What you get

  • Valid VideoObject JSON-LD
  • The three fields Google requires
  • Duration in ISO 8601 format
  • A content or embed URL for fetching
  • That name, thumbnailUrl and uploadDate, the fields Google requires, are present.
  • That the upload date includes a time zone, as Google recommends.
  • That duration is an ISO 8601 duration such as PT4M30S.
  • That a contentUrl or embedUrl is given so Google can fetch the video.
Three steps

How to use the Video Schema Generator

1

Enter the title, thumbnail and upload date

The three required fields. Use a thumbnail that represents the video.

2

Add the duration and a video URL

The file URL, or the embed URL for a hosted player.

3

Paste it into the page with the video

The page where the video actually plays, one block per video.

Why it matters

Why mark up video on your own pages

Video results need signals.

Google shows videos in results, the video tab and Discover. Markup states the thumbnail, date and duration instead of leaving Google to guess.

Three fields are required.

Name, thumbnailUrl and uploadDate. Without them the video is not eligible.

Give Google the file.

A contentUrl or embedUrl lets Google fetch the video, which it needs for features such as key moments.

Embeds count too.

A YouTube video embedded on your page can carry markup on your page, so the page, not only YouTube, can appear for it.

After you run it

What to do with the result

Video markup tells search engines that a page is about a video, and gives them the thumbnail, length and file they need to show it. It matters most on pages where the video is the main content. Generate it with the same title and thumbnail the page shows.
