What this markup does today

Review snippets show a star rating in results. Google does not show them for reviews a business writes about itself, or for LocalBusiness and Organization reviews on the business’s own site.

In the output

What you get

  • Valid Review JSON-LD
  • The item reviewed, with its type
  • A Rating with its scale
  • The reviewer as a Person
  • That the review names the item reviewed and gives it a specific type, such as Product or Book.
  • That the rating includes its value and, where it is not 1 to 5, its best and worst values.
  • That the reviewer is given as a Person.
  • That the output validates as Review before it ships.

Why it matters

Why review markup comes with rules

Stars stand out.

A review snippet shows a star rating beside the result, one of the most noticeable additions a result can have.

Self-serving reviews are excluded.

Google does not show review stars for reviews a business writes about itself, or for LocalBusiness and Organization reviews on its own site.

The scale matters.

A 4 means little without bestRating and worstRating. Include the scale.

The reviewer must be real.

A review needs an author, and it must be a genuine reviewer, not the business.

After you run it

What to do with the result

Review markup can earn one of the most eye-catching additions to a result, which is exactly why Google polices it. The reviews that qualify are editorial or user reviews of a specific item, published where a reader can see them, not a business rating itself on its own site.

Frequently asked questions

Most often because the review is self-serving: Google does not show review snippets for reviews a business publishes about itself, including LocalBusiness and Organization reviews on its own site. The review also has to be visible on the page.
