What you get
- A preview of the card X will draw
- Image size, measured in your browser
- Missing or invalid twitter: tags
- The exact tags to paste into your <head>
- twitter:card is present and a type X recognises, since it decides whether the large-image layout is used at all.
- The title and description X will use, after its fallback from twitter: tags to Open Graph to the page itself, against X’s length limits.
- The image’s real size and shape, measured in your browser, against X’s minimums for summary and large-image cards, plus format and https.
- That robots.txt lets Twitterbot fetch the page and the image, because a blocked crawler means no card at all.
How to use the X (Twitter) Card Validator
Enter the page URL
The page you are about to share. We read its tags and its robots.txt.
Check the preview and the rows marked Fix
The preview is drawn from the same tags X reads, in the same order.
Paste the suggested tags
Only the tags that are missing are listed, with placeholders to replace. Then check again.
Why check your card before you post
X retired its own preview.
The Card Validator stopped showing previews in 2022. The only other way to see your card is to post the link and look.
One missing tag changes the layout.
Without twitter:card set to summary_large_image, a link can show as a small thumbnail or plain text, however good the image is.
Images have hard limits.
Too small, the wrong shape, an SVG, or a URL that will not load, and X drops the image without saying why.
Cards are cached.
X keeps a card for about a week. A mistake posted today stays on that link until the cache expires.
What to do with the result
A share card is the first impression of a link, and on X a missing tag or a wrong-sized image turns it into plain text. Checking before you post costs a minute; fixing after costs a week of cache. Site Audit checks share tags across every page it crawls, and its page audit suggests the missing tags and builds a share image for you.
Site AuditFrequently asked questions
X still hosts cards-dev.twitter.com/validator, but since 2022 it no longer shows a preview, only a log. This tool draws the preview from the same tags X reads.
