Frase alternatives

By Priyanshi, CMO · Updated 5 Oct 2026

Frase is a capable low-cost content tool, so teams that leave usually want something specific it lacks. We list the alternatives in the order our published scoring rules put them, with Veritas, our product, scored by the same rules.

The short answer

Stay on Frase if its article caps and seats suit you: no tool here starts tracking AI answers for less. Move when you need more drafting volume, a bigger team, or claims traced to your own documents.

  • SurferFor a content score that covers SEO and AI search in one editor.$95/mo
  • SemrushFor research depth, with a 27.3 billion keyword database and backlink analysis.$199/mo
  • JasperFor brand voice and a Knowledge Base synced from Google Drive and SharePoint.Custom
  • VeritasOursFor drafts with every knowledge-based claim cited to your own documents, and users included in the price.$16/mo

How to choose a Frase alternative

Frase is hard to undercut. Its $49 Starter plan covers research, briefs, drafting and AI answer tracking, the platform adds a site audit, and the trial of 7 days needs no card. Teams leave when a limit starts to bite: 10, 40 or 100 articles a month by plan, $29 for each extra seat, or tracking that confirms only ChatGPT until the higher tiers.

If the article cap is the problem, look at how each alternative meters work. Surfer counts documents, 120 on Discovery and unlimited on Peace of Mind at $359 a month. Veritas, our product, meters chat conversations rather than articles: 10, 100 or 250 a month, with drafts built from your own documents and a citation for every knowledge-based claim.

If engine coverage is the problem, compare the cheapest tracking plans rather than the brochures. Frase adds Perplexity on Professional and holds Claude and Gemini back for the $299 Scale plan. Surfer’s AI Search Analytics tracks five engines daily for $95, Semrush five from $199 and Writesonic three from $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly. Veritas tracks four from $16, re-checked every two weeks.

If you need research depth rather than more writing, Semrush is the only full suite here, with over 27.3 billion keywords, backlink analysis and a technical audit. Writesonic suits a single brand that wants its GEO fixes done for it. Jasper is for brand governance across large teams, and its GEO agents sit on a custom-priced Business plan.

Before switching, export the briefs and scores you want to keep, and price seats honestly. Three people on Frase Professional cost $129 a month; on Veritas Growth, $78; on Surfer Standard, $119, though that plan tracks only ChatGPT, once a week.

Frase and 5 alternatives at a glance

Frase leads this list on our AI search score and starts tracking cheapest, at $49; each alternative costs more to begin tracking but adds something Frase lacks.

From is the cheapest published plan that tracks AI answers. The AI search score rates AI visibility and content features by our published rules; it is not a verdict on SEO depth.

Need drafts you can check claim by claim?

Veritas drafts from your own documents and cites every knowledge-based claim to the passage it came from, beside keyword research, site audits and AI visibility.

Why teams look past Frase

  • Article generation is capped at 10, 40 or 100 a month by plan.
  • Extra seats cost $29 a month each on Professional and Scale.
  • Claude and Gemini tracking are only on the $299 Scale plan.
  • Its AI agent drafts with brand context; its homepage does not describe per-claim citations to your documents.

AI answer tracking

Frase tracks 50 prompts daily from Starter, with engines added by tier: Perplexity on Professional, Claude and Gemini on Scale. Surfer and Semrush also track 50 prompts a day on their cheapest tracking plans, across five engines. Veritas tracks 5 prompts on Starter and 10 on Growth, on four engines every two weeks. Writesonic publishes neither prompt counts nor a refresh rate, and Jasper publishes no tracking detail at all.

Frase is the cheapest at every volume costed: $588 a year for one marketer with 50 prompts, $2,244 for a team of five with 100, and $5,328 for an agency running three brands. The same team of five would spend $4,308 a year on Surfer.

Which engines each tool covers

On the cheapest plan that tracks AI answers. Most vendors list more engines than that plan includes, so this is what you get at the price shown, not the brochure maximum.

On Frase’s $49 Starter plan only ChatGPT is confirmed; Surfer’s $95 tracking plan and Semrush Starter each cover five engines. Veritas covers four on every plan.

  3. 3The vendor does not publish how many prompts each plan tracks, so we cannot say which plan meets this setup.

Bars share one scale across the whole table, so cost growth shows as well as rank. A figure far above the rest is marked off scale.

The plan, seats and add-ons behind every figure are worked through on each tool’s review: Frase, Surfer, Semrush, Jasper, Writesonic and Veritas.

Each alternative against Frase

What you gain and what you give up with each, against Frase. Each tool’s full, sourced review is on its own page.

Semrush

Best for teams that have outgrown Frase and need real research depth.

Semrush homepage

Semrush is where a Frase team goes when briefs are no longer enough and the research itself has to go deeper. The Keyword Magic Tool draws on over 27.3 billion keywords, and the suite adds historical competitor data, backlink analysis, daily rank tracking of 500 keywords on the SEO plan, a technical site audit and digital PR. Starter tracks 50 prompts daily across five confirmed engines, including Claude and Gemini, which Frase keeps for its $299 Scale plan.

What you give up: a low bill. Tracking starts at $199 a month, about four times Frase Starter, extra users cost $45 to $100 by plan, and a team of five tracking 100 prompts pays $7,428 a year against $2,244 on Frase. The suite also takes longer to learn. Keep Frase for the writing if only the research falls short.

VeritasOurs

Best for teams that need drafts cited to their own documents, with several users.

Veritas homepage

Veritas is ours. Against Frase, the difference is where a draft’s facts come from. Veritas builds each draft from a knowledge graph of the documents you supply and gives every knowledge-based claim a numbered citation to its source, leaving out anything it cannot trace; Frase drafts with brand context but does not describe per-claim citations. Plans meter chat conversations rather than articles, up to 250 a month on Business. Growth includes three users for $78, less than Frase Professional charges for the same three, and adds local SEO.

What you give up: Frase tracks far more AI answers for the money, 50 prompts daily from $49, where Veritas tracks 5 on Starter or 10 on Growth every two weeks. Frase also publishes to Webflow, Sanity and Wix as well as WordPress, and offers MCP and a CLI; Veritas publishes to WordPress and has no API or MCP.

Surfer

Best for writers who want the deepest content score and daily AI tracking.

Surfer homepage

Surfer is the nearest match to Frase’s workflow, with more weight on the score. Its Content Editor puts an SEO score next to an AI Search score and closes gaps with Auto-Optimize, and Surfer AI adds internal and external links to sources while drafting. For tracking it confirms five engines, AI Mode among them, with 50 daily prompts on the $95 AI Search Analytics plan, where Frase Starter confirms only ChatGPT. Documents replace article caps: 120 on Discovery, 360 on Standard and Pro, unlimited on Peace of Mind.

What you give up: Frase’s lower monthly price and trial. Surfer lists no trial, its lowest prices need a yearly term, and Discovery includes no AI tracking. Its pages describe no technical site crawl or backlink tools, both of which Frase includes, and it drafts rather than publishes, where Frase sends pages to five CMSs.

Writesonic

Best for single-brand teams that want GEO fixes handled for them.

Writesonic homepage

Writesonic suits a Frase user whose priority has moved from writing articles to fixing how AI answers treat the brand. Its Action Center orders fixes by their likely effect on visibility and citations, an agent reworks existing pages for GEO by adding FAQ blocks and comparison tables, and it finds the Reddit threads, YouTube videos and listicles that cite competitors before drafting outreach to them. A technical audit from AI bot visits checks robots.txt, schema and indexing. Starter is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, and the free trial asks for no card.

What you give up: clarity on tracking and room to grow. Writesonic publishes no prompt allowance or refresh rate, where Frase states 50 daily prompts on Starter; self-serve plans track three engines; and seats stop at three on Growth, at $499 a month or $399 billed yearly. It describes no keyword research, so Frase’s SERP briefs have no direct replacement.

Jasper

Best for teams that care most about brand voice and governed content at scale.

Jasper homepage

Jasper is the pick when brand consistency across many writers matters more than search optimisation. Its work runs through more than 100 specialised agents and a Brand Voice system that applies tone and messaging to every asset, while a Knowledge Base fed from Google Drive and SharePoint informs agents as they write. Studio builds custom agents, Grid automates production at scale, and an MCP server takes brand context into other AI tools. Pro is $69 a month per seat, with a trial of 7 days on that plan.

What you give up: the search half of Frase. Jasper describes no keyword research, backlinks or site audits, and its GEO agents sit on the Business plan, custom-priced with a 12-month minimum. It publishes no engines, prompt counts or refresh rate for tracking, and adding a second user means moving to Business.

Switching from Frase

  1. 01Export briefs, drafts and content scores you want to keep; most do not import cleanly elsewhere.
  2. 02Note which Frase outputs your writers rely on, whether briefs, optimisation or AI drafting, and test that first in the replacement.
  3. 03Run your top ten pages through the new tool’s score to set a baseline before changing anything.
  4. 04Recreate AI visibility prompts exactly so trends stay comparable.
  5. 05Reconnect publishing and check formatting on one test post before moving the whole team.

What would change our verdict

  • Frase adding Perplexity, Claude or Gemini to its $49 Starter plan, which would remove the main engine gap against the alternatives here.
  • Frase raising its monthly article caps, which is the most common reason teams outgrow it.

Questions people ask

Which Frase alternative avoids a monthly article cap?

Veritas meters chat conversations rather than articles, 10, 100 or 250 a month by plan. Surfer’s Peace of Mind plan lists unlimited documents at $359 a month, or $299 billed yearly.

Which is closest to Frase’s workflow?

Surfer: plan topics, write to a score and draft with Surfer AI, now with AI tracking. Veritas covers the same steps but starts the draft from your own documents.

Do any of these cite sources in drafts?

Surfer AI inserts links to your pages and to external sources as it writes. Jasper lists transparent sourcing on its Knowledge Base page. Veritas attaches a numbered citation to every knowledge-based claim, opening the passage in your documents it came from.

How we chose4 tests every alternative had to pass
  • Volume limits. Whether articles, documents or conversations are capped, and at what price the cap lifts.
  • What drafts are built from. The open web, your brand context, or your own documents with citations.
  • AI visibility at your tier. Which engines are tracked on the plan you would actually buy.
  • Team size. Included seats against per-seat add-ons.
