Surfer vs Ahrefs

By Priyanshi, CMO · 12 Oct 2026

Surfer and Ahrefs are often used together: Surfer is a content optimiser, Ahrefs an SEO suite built around its backlink index.

The verdict

Surfer for writing to a score, drafts that link sources, and AI tracking at volume. Ahrefs for backlink and keyword research, site audits, and API and MCP access from the entry plan.

Choose Surfer if

Your writers work to a content score and you want seats included.

Choose Ahrefs if

You need backlink research, technical audits and API access from Lite.

How to choose between Surfer and Ahrefs

Surfer and Ahrefs are rarely substitutes for each other. Ahrefs is a research suite built on its link index, and it treats writing as an add-on; Surfer is a writing tool that leaves link data and technical crawling to something else. The decision is usually about which gap in your current setup costs you more.

If you already pay for Ahrefs, the question is whether the Content Kit at $99 a month is enough for your writers. It adds AI Content Helper and AI Content Grader, which grade drafts against top-ranking pages. Surfer does more for the person writing: a combined SEO and AI Search score with Auto-Optimize, drafts that insert source links as they go, and 120 documents on the $59 Discovery plan.

If you already use Surfer, Ahrefs fills the research side. Site Explorer covers 35 trillion live backlinks, a site crawler looks for over 170 SEO problems, and Rank Tracker follows 750 keywords on Lite, updated weekly. Surfer’s Content Audit reviews your pages for weak content and gaps, which is useful but is not a crawl of site health.

For a buyer who can only fund one tool, team shape decides. Surfer’s Pro plan puts five seats on one bill for $219 a month. Ahrefs Lite includes one user and allows only two more at $40 each, so a team of five starts on Standard at $249 plus four users at $60, $489 in total.

Buying terms differ too. Ahrefs has no trial, but its free plan covers sites you verify, and it publishes ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certification under its own name. Surfer lists no trial either, and the ISO 27001 certificate in the Positive trust centre belongs to a different Positive product. If procurement asks for certificates, only Ahrefs can show its own.

Surfer includes its content score and several seats in the plan price; Ahrefs brings backlinks, a 170-issue site audit, a free plan and security certification in its own name.

  • Content score. Ahrefs grades drafts in AI Content Helper and AI Content Grader, sold in the Content Kit from $99 a month.
  • AI prompts on the cheapest tracking plan. Surfer’s AI Search Analytics plan is $82 a month billed yearly. Ahrefs checks each prompt on one platform daily.
  • Starting price for AI tracking. The cheapest published plan that tracks AI answers: AI Search Analytics for Surfer, Lite for Ahrefs.
  • Security certification listed. Surfer links a trust centre run by Positive, which lists its ISO 27001 certification against a different Positive product.

Veritas, which we build, scores drafts live, covers keyword research, backlinks and site audits for your own domains, and drafts from your documents with every knowledge-based claim cited.

AI answer tracking

Surfer tracks ten times the prompts at a lower entry price. Its AI Search Analytics plan follows 50 prompts every day on five engines, Google AI Mode among them, for $95 a month, or $82 billed yearly. Ahrefs Lite, at $129, includes 5 prompts checked daily on one platform, chosen from seven surfaces that include Claude and Copilot, and covering more platforms spends the same 150 monthly checks.

Priced over a year, the gap grows with volume. One marketer on 10 prompts pays $1,140 for Surfer against $2,988 for Ahrefs Standard; lifting that to 50 prompts leaves Surfer unchanged but moves Ahrefs to its $1,499 Enterprise plan. A five-person team on 100 prompts pays $4,308 with Surfer, a volume no published Ahrefs plan reaches.

What AI answer tracking costs a year

These setups price one thing: tracking how AI assistants answer about you, for a given number of prompts and people, over twelve months. They are not the cost of the SEO toolkit, which is in the table above. Where no published plan fits, the note says why instead of guessing.

Bars share one scale across the whole table, so cost growth shows as well as rank. A figure far above the rest is marked off scale.

The plan, seats and add-ons behind every figure are worked through on each tool’s review: Surfer, Ahrefs.

What would change our verdict

  • Ahrefs including AI Content Helper in its base plans, which would weaken Surfer’s case for teams already paying for Ahrefs.
  • Surfer adding backlink research or a technical crawl, which would let it replace an SEO suite rather than sit beside one.

Questions people ask

Do I need Surfer if I have Ahrefs?

Only if writing is your bottleneck. Ahrefs covers research, audits and rank tracking, and sells AI writing as the Content Kit add-on from $99 a month. Surfer’s content score and drafting are its core product, and it tracks more AI prompts per dollar.

Which is cheaper?

Surfer starts at $59 a month, or $49 billed yearly, and Ahrefs at $129 a month, on prices read in September 2026. The two do different jobs, so the real comparison is usually Ahrefs with the Content Kit against Surfer plus a separate SEO tool.

Which tracks AI search better?

Surfer tracks more prompts: 50 a day on Pro or on AI Search Analytics, $95 a month or $82 billed yearly. Ahrefs reaches more engines, including Claude and Copilot, but includes 5 to 20 prompts on self-serve plans.
