Surfer and Semrush overlap on content and AI search from opposite ends: Surfer is a content optimiser, Semrush a full search marketing suite.

The verdict

Surfer for writing to a score, drafts that link sources, and seats included. Semrush for keyword research, backlinks, site audits and AI tracking at volume in one suite.

Choose Surfer if

Your writers work to a content score and you want several seats included.

Choose Semrush if

You need SEO research, site audits and Claude tracking in the same tool.

How to choose between Surfer and Semrush

These tools overlap less than their marketing suggests. Surfer is built for the writer with a draft open, and its product pages describe no keyword database, backlink tools or technical crawl. Semrush is built for the strategist deciding what to write and checking whether it ranked. Plenty of teams keep both, so the useful question is which one you need first.

Start with Surfer if the pages are already planned and the problem is getting them good enough. The Content Editor grades each draft for SEO and for AI Search at once, Auto-Optimize applies targeted fixes, and Surfer AI places links to your own pages and outside sources during drafting. Discovery costs $59 a month, or $49 billed yearly, and Pro includes five seats for $219.

Start with Semrush if you do not yet know what to write or whether it worked. Keyword Magic Tool draws on 27.3 billion keywords, Position Tracking updates daily, and a Technical Site Audit crawls the site for issues that affect search and AI visibility. The SEO plan is $139 a month for one user, and each colleague adds at least $45.

Headcount is where the two part ways on price. Surfer includes 1, 3, 5 or 10 seats by plan, so ten writers fit on Peace of Mind at $359 a month. The same ten on Semrush SEO would pay for nine extra users on top of the plan, at least $544 a month before any AI tracking.

Check the terms before you commit. Semrush offers a trial of 7 days on SEO, Starter and Pro+; Surfer lists none, and its “Start for Free” buttons lead to checkout. For automation, Surfer’s API controls the Content Editor itself and comes with Peace of Mind, while Semrush keeps API access for Advanced at $549.

Surfer leads on drafting with linked sources, seats included and a cheaper start to AI tracking; Semrush on backlinks, a technical site audit, Claude tracking and a trial.

What some rows meanThe plan or limit behind a cell, where it needs saying
  • AI drafts link sources as they write. Semrush Content Creation generates full-length articles from a brief.
  • AI writing. Surfer also scores drafts for SEO and AI Search side by side in its Content Editor, with Auto-Optimize.
  • Starting price for AI tracking. The cheapest published plan that tracks AI answers: AI Search Analytics for Surfer, Starter for Semrush.

Need drafts cited to your own documents?

Veritas, which we build, drafts from a knowledge graph of your documents with every knowledge-based claim cited, scores drafts live and tracks four AI engines. It prices per workspace, so try it on one domain first.

AI answer tracking

Both check AI answers daily across five engines: Surfer lists Google AI Mode, which Semrush’s wording leaves unclear, and Semrush includes Claude. Surfer’s cheapest route is the $95 AI Search Analytics plan, which does nothing but track, with 50 prompts and five seats; Peace of Mind raises the allowance to 100. Semrush starts at $199 on Starter with 50 prompts and reaches 200 on Advanced.

For one person tracking up to 50 prompts, a year costs $1,140 on Surfer and $2,388 on Semrush. Five users on 100 prompts pay $4,308 on Surfer Peace of Mind, seats included, against $7,428 for Semrush on Pro+, where each of the four added users costs $80. Neither has a published plan for 300 prompts, and the engine grid below shows where each plan’s coverage stops.

What AI answer tracking costs a year

These setups price one thing: tracking how AI assistants answer about you, for a given number of prompts and people, over twelve months. They are not the cost of the SEO toolkit, which is in the table above. Where no published plan fits, the note says why instead of guessing.

Bars share one scale across the whole table, so cost growth shows as well as rank. A figure far above the rest is marked off scale.

The plan, seats and add-ons behind every figure are worked through on each tool’s review: Surfer, Semrush.

What would change our verdict

  • Surfer adding backlink tools or a technical site crawl, which would remove Semrush’s clearest advantage on this page.
  • Surfer offering a free trial, which would change the buying comparison for small teams.
