Start by naming the job you want AI to do. On this list it does three different things: it writes and optimises pages (Surfer, Frase, Writesonic and Veritas, ours), it assists inside a full suite through writers and agents (Semrush, Ahrefs and SE Ranking), and it reports how AI answers mention your brand. Most buyers need one of the first two, and tracking is worth adding only at the right price.
Then check the data the AI works from, because a fluent draft aimed at the wrong keyword still misses. Semrush holds over 27.3 billion keywords and Ahrefs 35 trillion live backlinks, and SE Ranking pairs 5.5 billion keywords with daily checks of 2,000 on Core. Surfer and Writesonic describe no keyword database and Frase begins from SERP research, so all three sit beside a suite rather than replacing one.
Next, look at what the writer draws on. Surfer AI inserts source links, to your site and the wider web, during generation, Frase’s agent writes with brand context, and Writesonic reworks existing pages with FAQ blocks and comparison tables. Veritas writes from documents you upload and cites every knowledge-based claim; the others do not describe citations back to your own material, which matters when someone has to check each claim before it goes live.
Where AI sits in the plan changes the real price. Ahrefs sells AI Content Helper in a Content Kit from $99 a month on top of Lite at $129, and Semrush starts prompt tracking on Starter at $199 rather than on its $139 SEO plan. SE Ranking’s $129 Core plan already includes 100 daily prompts, and Frase tracks AI answers on every plan from $49.
Finally, count seats before comparing totals. Each extra user costs $45 to $100 a month on Semrush and $40 to $80 on Ahrefs, and extra SE Ranking seats start at $16, whereas Veritas includes three users on Growth and five on Business. Frase, Writesonic and SE Ranking all offer trials without a card, so you can test the AI on your own site first.
