Surfer alternatives

By Advik Jain, Co-founder & CEO, Optivus Technologies · Published 11 September 2026 · Updated 15 September 2026

Surfer’s content score is still its strength; teams usually look past it for monthly billing, a trial, or backlinks and site audits in the same tool. We list the alternatives in the order our published scoring rules put them, with Veritas, our product, scored by the same rules.

What would change our verdict

  • Surfer offering monthly billing rather than annual, which is a common objection to it.
  • Surfer publishing a trust centre in its own name rather than relying on another Positive product’s certification.

Frase runs research, briefs, drafting and optimisation from $49 a month, month to month, with site audits, backlinks, Content Guard, publishing to more CMSs, and MCP and a CLI. Article generation is capped by plan.

AI visibility tracking covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Google AI across its plans, widening as the price rises. It publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity and Wix, and connects to Claude and Cursor through MCP and a CLI.

Writesonic: full reviewA GEO platform that tracks AI visibility, ranks the fixes, rewrites pages and drafts outreach to the sites citing competitors.

Writesonic

GEO platform

Best for: Teams moving from content scoring to AI search execution

Writesonic trades Surfer’s editor-centric approach for GEO execution: an Action Center, page rewrites for AI search, a technical audit from AI bot visits and citation outreach, billed monthly with a card-free trial. Self-serve plans track three platforms.

Writesonic began as an AI writer and now presents itself as a generative engine optimisation platform. It tracks AI visibility, ranks opportunities in an Action Center by visibility and citation impact, and uses an AI agent to rewrite pages for GEO with FAQ blocks and comparison tables.

It also audits robots.txt, schema, indexing and broken pages from AI bot visits, surfaces the Reddit threads, YouTube videos and listicles citing competitors with drafted outreach, and connects to Google Analytics, Search Console, Looker Studio, WordPress, an API and MCP. It says more than 10,000 marketing teams use it.

Semrush: full reviewThe broadest search marketing suite, now part of Adobe, with AI visibility tracking and content creation built in.

Semrush

SEO and AI visibility suite

Best for: Teams that want content tooling inside a full SEO suite

Semrush brings content creation, a technical site audit, backlinks and AI visibility across five engines together with the deepest keyword data here. It costs more, AI search tracking starts on the $199 Starter plan, and extra users are $45 a month each.

Semrush is an all-in-one search marketing platform covering keyword research, competitor analysis, backlinks, rank tracking, local search visibility, technical site audits, digital PR and content creation. Its keyword database holds over 27.3 billion keywords, by its own count, which is the depth most teams buy it for.

It has moved hard into AI search. Its Research and Track toolkits now include AI Visibility, Prompt Research and AI Brand Sentiment across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and AI Overviews. Adobe completed its acquisition of Semrush on 28 April 2026, and says customers can expect an expanded roadmap as the two integrate.

Veritas: full reviewDrafts from your own documents with a citation on every claim, beside the SEO and AI visibility tools that decide what to write.

Veritas

Our productCited content, SEO and AI visibility

Best for: Teams that want cited drafts, backlinks and audits with monthly billing

Veritas has a live content score in an editor that drafts from your own documents with a citation on every knowledge-based claim, and adds keyword gap, backlinks and technical site audits. It bills monthly or annually and offers a free trial. Its score is less developed than Surfer’s AI Search scoring, it re-checks AI answers every two weeks rather than daily, and it has no API or MCP.

Veritas is an AI content and SEO platform built by Optivus Technologies. It organises a company’s own documents into a knowledge graph and drafts marketing content from it, attaching a numbered citation to every knowledge-based claim that opens the passage it came from. Claims it cannot trace to your material are left out rather than filled in.

Around the editor it bundles keyword research and gap analysis, competitor and SERP analysis, a live content score, site audits, backlinks, Google Analytics with Search Console, and AI visibility tracking across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Plans are priced per workspace in INR with users included.

What it does

  • Drafts from a knowledge graph of your documents, with a numbered citation on every knowledge-based claim that opens its source.source, 12 Sept 2026
  • A live 0 to 100 content score that updates as the draft is written.source, 12 Sept 2026
  • Keyword research, keyword gap and competitor analysis for the domains you work on.source, 12 Sept 2026
  • Site audits graded for Google and for AI crawlers in one crawl.source, 12 Sept 2026
  • AI visibility tracking across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, prompt by prompt, with share of voice against named competitors.source, 12 Sept 2026
  • Backlink monitoring and brand mentions from Content + SEO Premium; local SEO geogrids, LinkedIn and WordPress auto-publishing on Marketing Suite.source, 12 Sept 2026

Pros

  • Every knowledge-based claim in a draft opens the passage it came from, so review is a check rather than a rewrite.
  • Research, writing, scoring, audits and AI visibility sit in one workspace instead of three or four tools.
  • Users are included in a flat workspace price, which matters most for teams of three to ten.

Cons

  • AI answers are re-checked every two weeks, with on-demand checks in between. Several dedicated trackers refresh daily. source, 12 Sept 2026
  • Five engines are tracked. Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode are not. source, 12 Sept 2026

Jasper: full reviewAn AI content platform for marketing teams, built around brand voice, a synced Knowledge Base and more than 100 agents.

Jasper

AI marketing agents

Best for: Brand-led teams writing far more than search content

Jasper suits teams whose content is broader than SEO: brand voice, a Knowledge Base synced from Drive and SharePoint and more than 100 agents, billed monthly on Pro. It does not describe keyword research or audits, and its SEO features are on Business.

Jasper is an AI content platform for marketing teams, organised around more than 100 specialised agents, a brand voice system, Canvas for everyday work, Studio for building custom agents and Grid for automating content production at scale. It lists enterprise customers including Ulta Beauty, Morningstar, HarperCollins and Prudential.

Its Knowledge Base syncs product documents and brand material from Google Drive and SharePoint, and agents reference that knowledge while generating, which Jasper says reduces hallucinations and outdated claims. SEO, AEO and GEO features for monitoring citation rates sit on its Business plan, and Jasper MCP carries brand context into other AI tools.

What it does

  • More than 100 specialised agents executing end-to-end marketing workflows.source, 12 Sept 2026
  • Brand Voice, which carries brand guidelines, tone and messaging into every asset.source, 12 Sept 2026
  • Knowledge Base synced from Google Drive and SharePoint, which agents reference in real time while generating.source, 12 Sept 2026
  • Knowledge Base listed as enabling “transparent sourcing and citations”.source, 12 Sept 2026
  • SEO, AEO and GEO features to monitor citation rates, find content gaps and generate governed content.source, 12 Sept 2026
  • Studio for building custom agents, Grid for automations, and Jasper MCP for using brand context in other AI tools.source, 12 Sept 2026

Pros

  • The most mature brand voice and governance tooling of the writers compared here.
  • Knowledge Base connectors keep generation close to current product material.
  • Agents and automations suited to large content programmes across many teams.

Cons

  • Pro is priced per seat, and additional users require the custom-priced Business plan. source, 11 Sept 2026

How we chose4 tests every alternative had to pass
  • Billing and trial. Monthly billing and a trial let you test on your own content before committing a year.
  • Content scoring depth. Whether the score covers AI search as well as SEO.
  • What drafts are built from. Linked web sources, brand context, or your own documents with citations.
  • SEO beyond the editor. Backlinks, technical audits and keyword research in the same tool.
How we researched this pageMethod, what each vendor does not publish, and the update log

What each vendor does not publish

Where a figure below is missing, the charts say so rather than estimate it.

Frase
  • Frase does not say whether “Google AI” on its plans means AI Overviews, AI Mode or both.
  • Frase Starter includes one seat with no published price for more, so it is not costed for teams.
Writesonic
  • Writesonic does not publish prompt allowances, so it cannot be costed for a set number of prompts.
  • Writesonic does not publish how often it refreshes results.
Semrush
  • Semrush’s security page does not mention SOC 2.
  • Semrush sells a standalone AI Visibility Toolkit at $99 a month but does not publish how many prompts it tracks, so it is not in the yearly costs.
  • Semrush’s pricing page does not make clear whether the $139 SEO plan includes any AI search features.
Veritas
  • Veritas does not publish security certifications, so this page claims none. Ask us directly if your procurement needs them.
Surfer
  • Surfer does not publish how many seats each plan includes.
  • Surfer’s AI Search Analytics plan names ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews “and other AI models” without listing the rest.
Jasper
  • Jasper does not say which type of SOC 2 report it holds.
  • Jasper does not publish Business plan pricing, which AI engines it tracks there, or how many prompts, so it is not in the yearly costs.

How we researched this page

Every fact about a tool other than Veritas comes from that vendor’s own pricing page, product pages, documentation or announcements. Each one is linked where it appears, with the date we read it.

We build Veritas and use it every day. We have not run paid accounts of every other tool on this page, so we describe what each vendor publishes rather than scores from tests we did not run. Where a capability was not described on a vendor’s pages, the table says exactly that, which is not the same as saying the product lacks it.

G2, Capterra and TrustRadius blocked our automated reads, so any rating shown is the figure the vendor publishes about itself, labelled as such.

Prices and plans change. We re-read every vendor page at least every 90 days and record what changed in the update log below.

The scores and cost figures on this page are calculated, not assigned. Our full methodology sets out every rule, what each criterion is worth, and where our evidence runs out.

Disclosure. Veritas is our product. It appears on this page because it competes in this category, and we have tried to state its limits as plainly as anyone else’s. If anything here is wrong or out of date, write to support@getveritas.io and we will correct it and note the change in the log.

Update log
